SUMMARY:London in Motion - Term 2
DESCRIPTION:London in Motion continues with a term dedicate to the shooting and editing of more films followed by a screening event at the end of term. Film has a unique capacity to reveal the personal\, anonymous\, and collective routines of daily life in cities. This workshop is a mixture of theory and practice with special emphasis on new migration/refugees\, urban studies\, cityscapes. The films produced by the workshop will be screened by the LIDF\, SOAS and the University of London Institute in Paris. During the workshop students will learn to apply the basic principles and tools of documentary film making to research/project needs. This is an experimental course. It aims to examine how ‘thinking’ with\, and ‘through’\, images can produce insight with regard to certain anthropological and sociological questions. In the process deepening the medium’s analytical power and enhancing its audience reception. To this end we will examine how a range of media may be utilised to produce rich insights and creatively satisfying outcomes. We choose film as a tool because it has a unique capacity to reveal the personal\, anonymous\, and collective routines of daily life in cities. We will focus on the experiences and impact of refugees and new immigration: How has London changed its looks and appearances\, how have refugees and new migration altered everyday life in (some parts of) the city\, how do refugees and new migrants live\, work\, and move in and through the city\, and what is their own experience and perception of living in a global city like London? Through the documentary workshop we want to explore the idea that there are different (but also similar and overlapping) parallel ‘Londons’: immigrants inhabit and imagine London in their own manner\, creating specific networks and mental maps of the city\, and interacting with other Londoners in culturally specific ways. Dates: 18th January to 14th March 2020.

SUMMARY:London in Motion - Urban Documentary Film Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Film has a unique capacity to reveal the personal\, anonymous\, and collective routines of daily life in cities. This workshop is a mixture of theory and practice with special emphasis on new migration/refugees\, urban studies\, cityscapes. The workshop will produce 10 short films. The films produced by the workshop will be screened by the LIDF\, SOAS and the University of London Institute in Paris. During the workshop students will learn to apply the basic principles and tools of documentary film making to research/project needs. The initiative will be mirrored by a similar workshop in Paris and the end products will be exchanged between the two cities\, as well as being screened at the London International Documentary Festival and at SOAS. The workshop is run by Patrick Hazard\, the Director of the London International Documentary Festival. Together we will develop short narratives about contemporary London. Great emphasis will be placed throughout on teamwork\, and critical feedback. The core objective of this project is to explore in an inter-disciplinary manner various new\, cheap and easily accessible visual technologies as tools for urban research and teaching in urban studies. Aims To provide an overview of documentary theory and practice\, while involved in telling a contemporary London story through film. The challenge will be to see how film enriches and provides research insights\, while at the same time creating new ways of experiencing that research. Key films and key texts will be viewed and discussed. The course is innovative in its ambition to explore the documentary and research possibilities of new\, ‘democratising’ and affordable visual technologies. The course will explore the importance and relevance of these technologies for filmmaking and research in urban environments. Venue: SOAS\, London Dates: 12th October to 23rd November with screenings at the end of November

SUMMARY:Visualising Compelling and Powerful Messages on Refugees and Displacement through Short Impact Documentaries
DESCRIPTION:Norwegian Refugee Council/London International Documentary Festival and SOAS jointly host a one day workshop on: Visualising Compelling and Powerful Messages on Refugees and Displacement through Short Impact Documentaries Context Based on figures released in June 2018 by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)\, by the end of 2017\, an unprecedented 68.5 million have forcibly left their homes with at least 25.4 million having left their country of birth and therefore considered refugees. Over recent years\, the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe has\, in particular\, generated attention among the public and in general\, sources of information are predominantly derived from local and national media and campaigns. There are many displacement situations around the world that receive more coverage and awareness than others. In addition\, protracted displacement which involves those who have sought refuge in host countries for decades can slip off the list of attention and become neglected. NGOs and other international organisations involved in providing response and services to refugees and displaced populations are increasingly turning to visual products to bring the issues to the forefront\, promote their work and share powerful and compelling messages across to various target audiences on a wide scale. However\, the direct voices of refugees themselves are not always easily or readily accessible often enough. This challenge is recognised by organisations involved\, particularly those on the ground who are in regular contact with displaced populations. They witness first-hand the hardships refugees endure as well as the heartwarming\, success stories encountered. Such content needs to be developed into engaging visual products for widespread awareness raising among the general public\, influencers\, decision and policy makers. Acknowledgment of this fact has therefore further raised demand for video and film production within the humanitarian and development sector. At the same time\, it is crucial to consider that film production can be highly costly and time intensive. Therefore engagement with and commissioning documentary producers and film makers requires well-thought through planning with a clear pathway from A to Z of the processes. Sharp and key messages need to be adequately – and powerfully – translated onto the screen and into the hearts and minds of their audiences. New technology and democratised access to digital media have also impacted strategies that seek to heighten global awareness of refugee related issues. Such tools are integral to efforts seeking to inspire empathy\, political engagement\, social activism\, donor funding and charitable giving. Documentary film production for humanitarian and development actors therefore consists of two main objectives: It can educate and raise awareness like few other forms of media\, also serving as an evidence-based resource. Through targeted content creation and messaging – in both feature and short films – and through the high viewership it seeks to reach\, it significantly contributes towards mobilising engagement\, empathy and understanding as well as grassroots influence towards inspiring changes in perception and action. The one day workshop will address the following issues: Refugees in host countries; with a focus on Afghan refugees in Iran Working with children - ethics\, protection risks and security Social impact documentary films The working relationship between NGOs and filmmakers Strategic planning and outreach for audience engagement Impact measurement and empirical analysis Objectives 1. Raising awareness of key stakeholders – policy makers; donors and other actors from the humanitarian and development sector and the general public in the UK about: The critical importance of providing essential services such as access to education for displaced children and best practice examples; Voices from the displaced. 2. Enabling exchanges and discussions on the role of visualisation tools – such as video production that organisations can use to share information on the plight of refugees (how it can enable organisations to bring displaced/refugees’ voices to the forefront). 3. Examine experiences and best practice for ‘impact documentaries’ with particular attention to strategic planning\, social media strategy\, and impact assessment. Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is an independent humanitarian organisation helping people forced to flee. With headquarters in Oslo\, Norway they work in 32 countries where they help save lives and rebuild futures. NRC has been present in Iran since 2012 and implements projects in nine provinces. Through their solid technical expertise and specific sectorial knowledge in education\, shelter\, water\, sanitation and hygiene\, information\, counselling and legal assistance\, livelihoods and food security\, they provide assistance to an increasing number of displaced Afghans in Iran and their host communities. In 2018\, their projects reached 74\,834 individuals.

Together we will develop short narratives about contemporary London. Great emphasis will be placed throughout on teamwork\, and critical feedback. SUMMARY:Calais Children (French version)
DESCRIPTION:Thurs 7th Dec\, 7-9 pm University of London Institute in Paris\, 9-11 Rue de Constantine Panel with Sue Clayton\, Patrick Hazard and Anna-Louise Milne. Sue Clayton | 2017 | UK | 60 min As the Calais jungle was set to be razed in October 2016\, there were over 1900 unaccompanied minors stranded there - many of whom had a legal case to enter the UK. Sue Clayton fought to get these children recognsied and their cases heard. But with the camp soon to go up in flames\, could she do it in time and what would happen to the children if not? What happened next is a shameful indictment of the UK’s human rights record\, as the young people suffered delays\, denials and dismissal from the UK government\, and were finally left abandoned in France with no support at all. CALAIS CHILDREN: A CASE TO ANSWER follows the young people over the months since they left the Jungle. The film speak to Lord Dubs\, the volunteer groups\, and the lawyers with whom she is challenging the Home Office’s actions in the High Court. A compelling film that follows the scandal of what happened to the almost 2\,000 lone children who were in the Calais jungle as it burned down last year/. Most of whom had a legal case to be in the UK. What went wrong? Where are they now? SUMMARY:'My Best: George Best - the man behind the legend' with Calum and Angie Best and director Luigi Maria Perotti
DESCRIPTION:MY BEST: George Best – the man behind the legend Followed by a discussion with Calum Best\, Angie Best\, Phil Hughes and director Luigi Maria Perotti World Premier Dir. Luigi Maria Perotti | 2017 | 82 min | Italy/UK “I spent a lot of money on booze\, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered” So wrote George Best\, one of the greatest football players. Handsome\, talented and utterly cheeky\, he became the Fifth Beatle\, the footballing rock star of the late sixties and early seventies. And\, like many rock stars\, he died too young\, at age 59\, a victim of himself. Calum Best was born in San Jose\, California in 1981. Raised on the beaches of Malibu\, he was ambivalent to the notion that he was the son of a legend. That all changed when\, at 23\, he arrived in the UK for the first time and was hit by the full force of his father’s fame. “We didn't know each other very well. I came to the UK to learn who my father was\, but I didn't learn it at all. He was an alcoholic. We talked about girls and football but that was it. He never said “I love you”. Several years have passed since George Best died. Calum\, blessed also with good looks and heir to the Best celebrity status\, has indulged in many of his famous father’s excesses. He has become more and more uncomfortable with the fact that a surname made famous by a man he knows nothing about has had such an influence on his life. Calum embarks on a journey to discover who his father really was and ask why his father was unable to have a relationship with his only son? Not a film about football but a study in familial identification\, of loss\, and questions about celebrity\, masculinity and addiction. Tickets available on-line only. This is a high demand event and will sell-out quickly. Book early.

SUMMARY:'Flaneurs' with director Matthew Lancit
DESCRIPTION:Presented by LIDF in partnership with Lost in Frenchlation and Spoken Word Paris. Between film projects and following the birth of his daughter\, a Canadian in Paris must confront his slacker lifestyle and decide if there is something in it worth passing on to the next generation\, or if he is better off getting a job. In search of the remaining traces of flâneurs (19th Century wanderers of Paris)\, he takes his daughter on a series of poetic strolls in which he assumes the role of a contemporary flâneur and crosses the path of people who help reveal the relevance of such a figure today. In the movement back and forth between the filmed streets of Paris and scenes from the domestic life of a young father\, a dialectic emerges between a baby experiencing and making sense of the world and these wandering men trying to do the same. There are 24 workshops places available for both days and 40 participant-observer places for the Folio Review on Sunday 5th February. The practices of photography and film-making share a rich history. Twenty four photographers will be given the opportunity to take part in a 2-day intensive Documentary Photography workshop lead by internationally acclaimed photographers and photo editors with a limited number of places available to observe and participate in the folio reviews. The Workshop and Folio Review Aimed at advanced amateurs or young professionals with a good understanding of photographic practices\, the event will lead two intimate groups of 12 individuals through an intensive 2-day program of shooting\, mentoring\, reviews\, group critiques\, and\, culminating in the exciting opportunity to ‘pitch’ their work for folio review to leading industry professionals. Participants will work together with their peers and a professional photographer to develop their own individual visual language\, photographic identity and practical\, technical and conceptual skills required to compete in the ever-changing marketplace. The classroom sessions at the beginning and end of the day will focus on the practice of editing and group critiques. Together these activities form the backbone of the learning process and are integral to the workshop experience. The workshops will be based in central London\, with good transport links enabling participants to travel easily around the city. Tutors and Reviewers Peter Dench (www.peterdench.com) Peter is based in London working primarily in the Ad\, Editorial and Portraiture fields of Photography. SUMMARY:Documentary Production 2.
DESCRIPTION:Conception to Distribution - A Production Guide Production and Pitching Workshop January 2017\, London & Paris Booking Code: DOC2 Every documentary film is unique. It has its own audience\, its own scale\, its own objectives. Objectives that are not only artistic and entertainment orientated but frequently linked to campaigns or social movements. In order to make any film effective in realising its ambitions a clear and integrated production strategy is vital. Documentaries\, in contrast to fiction films\, have particular development and production issues. Documentary production lacks a clearly defined funding and distribution structure. Furthermore\, the uses and objectives of documentary film are varied. Documentary production therefore requires creative strategies. There is no one-way of doing things. This workshop is designed to help you refine a strategy tailor-made for your films specific needs\, whether you are producing a 10 minute short or a two hour epic\, whether your budget is £50 or £50\,000 the principles of coherent production apply. Aims and Objectives The workshop aims at enabling documentary filmmakers to create an integrated production strategy that is focused\, manages expectations and optimises fundraising opportunities\, audience share\, distribution and sales. It offers an effective ‘route map’ to guide projects of any size through the myriad production strategies available. It aims to prepare directors and producers to be in control of their project and avoid common oversights during production. To work with filmmakers to best pitch and present their project to funders\, commissioning editors\, the festival circuit and other platforms. The workshop may also be attended by observers and audience members who are free to participate and contribute during the open sessions as well as observe the selected projects as they receive one-to-one expert advice. Workshop Structure and Content The workshop is designed to assist filmmakers (up to 3 members of a production team may take part in the workshop) in all aspects of promotion\, funding and\, exhibition of their film. As such it will bring together tutors who are experts in: Funding PR/Marketing Commissioning/Acquisitions Legals Distribution Festivals Filmmakers who have already been through the process of autonomous production will also be on-hand to present their experience and assist those taking part in the workshop. Each selected project will have the opportunity to pitch their ideas followed by intense one-on-one sessions with the various experts who will help analyse their pitch and provide specific guidance in the development of their production strategy. Each project will move around the room from table to table benefiting from the individual expertise. Observers will also be present who can listen to the developing conversations and take notes. Each project will be able to represent their project proposal int he afternoon. The workshop will conclude with an open discussion about each project providing further feedback and a response to what has been gleaned during the workshop. Each participating filmmaker/s will receive a handbook and samples of relevant documents\, from release forms to samples of Sales agreements and Licenses. The day will aloo allow plenty of opportunity for informal discussion and networking. All participating projects will also benefit from a post-workshop follow up w including the opportunity to promote their film on the LIDF website. Topics will include: Treatments and synopses; funding strategies; how to pitch successfully\, promotional material\, contracts\, trailers\, PR\, distribution\, sales\, festivals\, TV\, rights\, legalities. The Road Map All projects will benefit from the Road Map drawn up by the workshop creators. The objective of the Road Map is to provide a clear and concise ‘map’ of the questions that a project should ask of itself at each stage of its development. The intention behind this is to utilise the experience of professional documentarians to help others avoid the pitfalls of lack of planning and clarity at each stages of the process. Not all elements will apply to each project\, it is up to the projects developed to decide which elements are relevant to them and to tailor\, with the help of the project tutors\, a Road Map for their specific needs and expectations. Cut out waste\, avoid surprises and future difficulties\, help a project move forward feeling secure that it has the fundamentals in place at each stage of development. How to Take Part Participation in the one-day production and pitching workshop is competitive and by selection. Space will also be provided for observers and audience members who are free to participate in the open sessions and observe the one-to-one advice sessions. Every application will receive comments and feedback based upon the guidelines and principles to be used in the workshop itself (See the Application Form). From these applications 10 projects will be selected. for inclusion in the all-day workshop. Participants must have an idea or a story they wish to develop\, of any scale or budget\, and any subject matter. SUMMARY:Pleasure and Knowledge in Documentary Film
DESCRIPTION:Panel discussion with Kate Townsend (Executive Producer\, Storyville)\, and Aidan Laverty\, (Series Editor\, Horizon) Documentary film has become for many a primary source of knowledge about the world around us. Whether it be an investigative report\, an observational doc\, a narrated factual programme\, or a piece of live action uploaded to Youtube. As such documentaries can be powerfully persuasive\, able to shape attitudes and world views. Or at least many would claim as such\, claim that they can entertain as well as be progressive means of conveying information. Made for TV documentaries operate within a particular set of objectives and circumstances. These affect style\, content and the commissioning process. How do independent filmmakers understand these needs\, and what scope is there for alternative forms of presentation. The styles\, strategies and structures of a documentary film also operate in ways which shape the means and possibilities of understanding. The subject is spoken for in subtle ways that reflect not only cinematic qualities\, but the institutional structures that sustain production\, prevailing political or intellectual trends. Therefore\, we may well ask what rhetorical operations inform these films\, and what interpretative perspectives are encompassed? How do they not only entertain but educate\, and how have concerns to engage\, and appeal to mass audiences\, reduced rather than increased diversity of subject matter? To book click HERE

SUMMARY:Anand Patwardhan Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The LIDF is delighted to welcome Anand Patwardhan to the festival where he will conduct a workshop on Political Cinema following the screening of his film 'War and Peace'. Anand has been making political documentaries for nearly three decades pursuing diverse and controversial issues that are at the crux of social and political life in India. Many of his films were at one time or another banned by state television channels in India and became the subject of litigation by Patwardhan who successfully challenged the censorship rulings in court. Patwardhan has been an activist ever since he was a student -- having participated in the anti-Vietnam War movement; being a volunteer in Caesar Chavez's United Farm Worker's Union; working in Kishore Bharati\, a rural development and education project in central India; and participating in the Bihar anti-corruption movement in 1974-75 and in the civil liberties and democratic rights movement during and after the 1975-77 Emergency. Since then he has been active in movements for housing rights of the urban poor\, for communal harmony and participated in movements against unjust\, unsustainable development\, miltarism and nuclear nationalism.

Formed by Jeremy Taylor in 2003\, it enables pupils between the ages of 13-18 to make their own short films under the guidance of a team of industry professionals led by the renowned documentarist\, Michael Grigsby. Together with visiting tutors Jonas Mortensen (cinematography)\, Mikkel Eriksen (sound design)\, Nikolaj Larsen (editing)\, Rebekah Tolley (production) and animators Joanna Harrison and Geoff Dunbar\, Mike and Jeremy encourage the AFU students to adopt the highest standards\, and develop their ideas through a process of careful research and reflection. AFU students have produced nearly a hundred short films to date\, several of which have been screened at the National Film Theatre in London\, the British Film Festival in Dinard\, France and the BUFF Film Festival in Malmo\, Sweden. AFU films have also won first prize at the Oxdox International Film Festival (2005)\, the New Shoots Festival (2006) and The Future Film Festival (2010). Two AFU films have been selected for the London International Documentary Festival in 2008 and 2011. The first a 30-minute documentary about disabled people in Cambodia called Gravel and Stones (2007) that went on to achieve a commercial dvd release in France. The second a 25-minute documentary examining the experiences of young people growing up in Moldova\, a European country still coming to terms with the break up of the Soviet Union in 1991 and struggling to find its own identity in the face of political tensions and economic hardships. Details The experienced tutors will help you explore the history\, theory and practice of documentary film and work closely with you as you create your final projects. While working at Granada television in the 1950‘s he formed the independent film-making collective Unit Five Seven. Encouraged by Karel Reisz and Lindsay Anderson and part-funded by the British Film Institute Experimental Film Fund he made two films with the group\, Enginemen (1959) and Tomorrow's Saturday (1962)\, the former being shown in the last of Free Cinema's occasional programmes at London's National Film Theatre. Even in these early films the quality which so distinguishes Grigsby's later works was already apparent\, namely a concern for the lives of ordinary people. As he himself has put it: "my driving force for the last 20 or so years has been trying to find a way\, through films\, to give voice to the voiceless." Grigsby does his utmost to let people speak for themselves. Rebekah Tolley Rebekah Tolley is film and media producer\, award winning digital artist and photographer and a visiting tutor to the Abingdon Film Unit. Until recently she worked as an Executive Producer for one of the UK’s large super indie media production companies\, working on a number of high profile projects for clients such as the BBC and the United Nations. Her other work has included interviews for BAFTA Los Angeles Heritage Archive Collection\, which featured icons of 20th Century British Cinema\, including Ossie Morris\, Sir Sydney Samuelson and the late Ronald Neame. Her photographic work has been featured in The Guardian\, Observer Magazine\, Radio Times\, Santa Fe’s ‘THE’ magazine’s annual Best of World Photography edition (2005) and BAFTA Academy magazine. Rebekah was short listed for an Arts Council prize for animation and was a recipient of a LabCulture Award for film\, shown in collaboration with No Art-No Architecture by architect Will Alsop\, at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In 2005 Rebekah worked with Michael Grigsby on his film ‘Rehearsals’\, the third of a trilogy of films he made about the troubles in Northern Ireland. Since then she has worked closely with Michael as his creative producer – the pair currently have two new feature length documentaries in development and they are also working towards developing a fiction feature project. Michael Yorke After hitch-hiking to India in 1962 and becoming a professional stills photographer\, Michael Yorke became an anthropologist specialising in South Asia. He wrote a Ph.D. thesis and did post doctoral research on The Mundari and Gondi speaking South Asian tribal peoples. As an academic he was involved in visual anthropology and shot and edited a film on the Ho tribe. Drawn into professional film-making\, he became part of the BBC Anthropology Unit. His first film\, “Dossers”\, was entered for the BAFTA Awards by the BBC. Over the last 35 years he has developed an increasing professionalism in many styles of television documentary\, such as live event television\, presented programmes\, observational\, fly-on-the-wall\, corporate film and authored documentaries. He has received many major international awards\, including the Earthwatch Award and the Golden Gate Award from San Francisco\, and The Royal Television Society and BBC Asia Award in the United Kingdom. At present he teaches practical filmmaking in the Department of Anthropology at University College London. Patrick Hazard Patrick Hazard is the founder and director of the LIDF. He has also\, over the last three years\, devised a series of filmmaking workshops in Pakistan and produced 16 short documentaries with young Pakistani filmmakers. He presently has a Pakistan based feature length documentary in development.
