The tattered flags and crudely painted images of menace and violence, carefully maintained by the opposing communities in Belfast, still shock despite being seen over and over again in the press and on TV. This restrained monochrome portrait of ‘peaceful’ Belfast returns to confront the images once again and manages to convey
a terrible melancholy by constructing a little documentary of genuine beauty from the pervasive ugliness.
